Assessing the carbon-related impacts and benefits of timber in construction products and buildings
Although in some areas of the world, in particular the tropics, the amount of forest is decreasing, in many parts of the world the amount of forestry and of carbon stored in the biosphere is increasing. For Europe, over the last ten years, an average balance of 570 million tonnes of CO2 has been added to its forestry carbon sink each year1. Converting land to forest results in increased soil carbon in most cases2, but this increase cannot be taken into consideration according to the EN 15804+A2.
In Europe, the amount of biogenic carbon stored in harvested wood products increases by around 40 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
